If you are having any trouble with your Zune, a Hard Reset will often fix it. Here is how to do it:
Warning To restore the Zune device software, you must have a Windows-based computer that has an Internet connection. That computer must have the Zune software installed. And you must be able to connect the Zune device to a USB port on that computer by using a Zune Sync Cable. Do not perform the following steps if you do not have any one or more of these things immediately available.
After you start to restore the Zune device software, you cannot again use the device until you complete all the steps. You will not receive any confirmation or warning on the Zune device after you start the following procedure.
To restore the Zune device software, follow these steps:
| 1. Set the Hold Switch to unlocked. | |
2. Press and hold the Back button while you press and hold the top of the Zune Pad. When the Zune device begins to power up, release the buttons. |

| 3. Immediately after you release the buttons in step 2, press and hold the following combination of buttons, depending on your Zune model: | |
| - If you have the 4GB Zune, the 8GB Zune, or the 80GB Zune, immediately press and hold the Back button while you press both the Zune Pad and the Play/Pause button. Continue to hold these buttons until your Zune device restarts and “Please wait” appears on the screen. | ![]() |
| - If you have the 30GB Zune, immediately press and hold the Back button while you press both the left side of the Zune pad and the center of the Zune pad. Continue to hold these buttons until your Zune device restarts and “Please wait” appears on the screen.
Note “Clearing contents. Please wait” appears, followed by “Connect Zune to your PC.” |

| 4. After “Connect Zune to your PC” appears, connect the Zune device to the computer that has the current Zune software installed, and then update the device to the current Zune device software. |

I have a zune that will no longer connect to the zune software on my pc. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the software many times on 3 different pc’s. The zune will charge on the usb port, but it will no longer connect to the software. My question is: If I do the hard reset on my zune, will it rnder it useless due to the fact that it no longer connects to the software? Please help I really need to put new music on my zune. Thanks in advance
glastronix: it sounds like an issue with the software on your Zune and not the PC. So, a hard reset of the Zune would be the best thing to try at this point. This should reset the Zune and allow you to reinstall the latest firmware and then hopefully fix your issue.
This isn’t working on my 30 gig. When I get to step 3, it just scrolls through my artists, playlists, songs etc.
Shelby: Make sure you follow the instructions for the 30GB zune as it’s a little different.

How about a Zune that will periodically reset itself, even when the keys are locked? Mine reset itself 4 times in a 10 minute timeframe….can you say useless?

its a black screen already & as soon as i pushed up and back, NOTHING HAPPENED. i held it for about 2 minutes and it still wouldnt turn on ! i have noooo idea whats going on with thiss ///: HELP. (4gb)

To all the people that are having problems with step 3:
It takes a couple of tries to do it. But if you own the 30GB model, you have to immediately press the back, center, and left buttons after you press the back and up buttons.
I did the hard reset and everything worked fine, but when i connected it to the computer to restore the firmware it said "Software error, error code = C00D11CD" it does it everytime i connect now and cant think of what to do =/ any help would be appreciated =]

OK I was stuck on stage 3, the page was not frozen but i could not press back, next and cancel buttons. So i kept resetting my zune(4gb)and it did. So finally i exit out of the stage page and now i cant get back too it. My zune is charging but still wont connect to my Zune software to put music on it. Does any body know what I am saying, or where i went wrong? Help?

having a bit of a problem. whenever my zune turns on, it goes to the menu, stops responding and turns off after 3 seconds. tried to use the hard reset method, but the time period before it turns off is too short. any ideas?

How you guys doing Im kinda frustrated right now cause i have a 30 gig and for the life of me i cant this this thing to hard reset im following the steps you have shown and i try to reset this thing like about 5 times a day and have been trying for about 2 weeks now and if it helps when the thing turns on i cant push any keys even though its unlocked and everything like the screen is frozen then i do the step were you hold back and press up yeah it work then i immedditly hold back and left and center and the dam thing wont come up as please wait and just stays on the stupid loading screen and wont stop till it dies.

Hello, I am have a serious issue with my Zune 30 gb. I notice I only have this problem when I’m jogging with my player. I assume it’s from all the jostling when I run. It freezes up sometimes but all I have to do is turn the unit off then turn it back on an it resets and I’m good to go. But this last time was the worst, I am unable to play most of my music and I cant view any pictures or video. I get and error message that reads, “The item is missing or cant be played.” I tried to perform the hard reset an the unit didn’t even turn on. I don’t know if it’s because I have the 1st generation Zune and some other process is needed. Is there another method of performing a hard reset for an older model Zune? If not, what else could I do to remedy this problem? Thank You.

I have an 8gb zune, and Im having the same problem as Skylar. Its just a blank screen. Ive tried the hard reset 9 times now, it just sits there. Should I let the battery drain? Or should I charge it for a long period of time. It was working fine, and then I plugged it in to the computer for updates. Then in the middle of updating, it became the blank screen. PLEASE HELP!!!
